On June 23, 2020 at 5:11AM, the Sherman Police Department received a frantic 911 call from a juvenile female stating her father had been stabbed by a family member and she was currently hiding in a room of the house. Officers arrived and forced entry into the residence after hearing screams for help coming from inside the residence.
By following the victim’s screams, officers located 22-year-old Chazz Hailey, covered in blood and holding a large knife, in a bathroom doorway. For nearly two minutes, officers pleaded with Mr. Hailey to drop the knife and exit the bathroom, so officers could go in to check the welfare of the victims and get them help. Those pleas went ignored.
Ultimately, Mr. Hailey slammed the door to the bathroom to continue his assault on the victims. Officers acted immediately, pursing the suspect who was continuing towards the victims with a knife. Officers immediately shot the suspect to protect the life of the juvenile victim who was being stabbed by Mr. Hailey. Mr. Hailey died from the officer’s use of deadly force.
Inside the bathroom, officers located the severely wounded juvenile victim who was bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds, and a mortally wounded adult male victim, 62-year-old William Patterson Sr., who also had been stabbed multiple times.
The juvenile victim was taken from the bathroom and officers performed immediate life saving measures. The female was transported by EMS for treatment of her injuries and is currently in critical condition.
Despite attempts at life saving measures by officers and EMS, Mr. Patterson was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Texas Rangers responded to the scene and assumed the investigation of this officer involved shooting incident.
